Perennial small shrub
Literature says hardy to Zone 9, I have grown in 7a with no trouble. When it dies to the ground in the colder zones in the winter, simply mulch heavily or cover with clear plastic and mulch. I suspect it can be possible hard to zone 5b with protection but you never know until you try.
Great in ground or containers (if in containers must be protected from severe cold (below 20 for long periods of time)
Low fertility requirements
Easy to grow
Drought tolerant, but also tolerates lots of water
Attractive in an explicable way
This pomegranate relative is the only plant we carry that is not edible. It has been used as a psychoactive in its native range in parts of Mexico/Central America and by others that have grown it elsewhere. We have never tried it, nor encourage anyone to do so, but the best info we have found on this use can be found here
Literature says they are hardy only to Zone 9, I have found them able to survive (die to the roots and come back in the spring looking great) in Zone 7a, and through some very cold winters here that were more like Zone 6 weather. I left several to die in the cold and they still came back. That being said, you might want to cover them after they have died to the ground in the winter (cut back the twigs to the ground) with plastic and heavy mulch.
